It easy to learn how to make French toast, how to freeze it and how to reheat it. But it's a bit time consuming to make on busy mornings. Freeze French toast ahead, however, and you’ve got a healthy homemade breakfast that you can grab, reheat and eat in less than 5 minutes.
French toast makes a great breakfast because the eggs provide protein while the bread provides carbs. To really round out the meal grab some fruit and go light on the butter and syrup.
French Toast Recipe
- 12 slices bread
- 8 eggs
- ¼ cup milk
- (opt) 1 tsp vanilla
- Cooking oil spray or butter
Preheat a frying pan or electric griddle. I use med-high heat on the stove or 350 on the griddle.
Break the eggs into a shallow bowl or dish. A smaller casserole dish works if you don’t have shallow bowls. Add the milk and vanilla to the eggs and beat together.
Grease the pan or griddle with the cooking spray or butter, then dip a slice of bread into the egg mixture and flip it to coat the other side. Place the battered bread on the griddle and cook until it’s lightly golden brown then flip and cook the other side. Repeat until you use all the bread.
On a large griddle I can fit 8 pieces at once but a large frying pan may only fit two or three.
How to Freeze French Toast
Tip:Let your French toast cool on a bakers rack instead of stacking if you plan to freeze them. They will stay crispier and cool faster.
Place the French toast in a single layer on a cookie sheet and put them in the freezer until partly frozen about 1-2 hours. After frozen solid put the frozen French toast into a freezer bag.
You can also wrap each piece of toast in a sheet of plastic food wrap and place the wrapped toast in a freezer bag or tin foil.
Either way be sure to label, date and add it to your freezer inventory sheet.
How to Reheat Frozen French ToastYou can reheat French toast in the microwave a minute or two. It also reheats well in the toaster while still frozen just like the store bought kind.
If you’re heating a lot at once put them on a cookie sheet in the oven at 350F for 10 minutes, flip and cook until the heated through, another 5 minutes maybe.
Alternatively you can put them under the broiler, be sure to watch carefully and flip them. Broiler times will vary based on the oven and how close the tray is to the broiler.
